A free football programme supporting young people in Dundee to stay active, build confidence and make positive life choices will continue for another year. Active Dundee has secured ongoing Dundee Partnership funding for its Freekickz programme for 2026 to 2027, delivering regular sessions for young people aged 12 to 18 in Coldside, East End and North East wards.
The programme provides a safe, welcoming space where young people can take part in sport within their own communities, helping to build confidence, encourage teamwork and promote responsible behaviour. Freekickz is designed not only to get young people active, but to create positive connections and support wider personal development.
Dan Curnyn, Physical Activity Development Officer at Active Dundee, said
“Freekickz is about more than football. It gives young people a safe space to be active, build relationships and develop confidence. We are pleased to see the programme continue and support more young people across Dundee to make positive choices.”
Freekickz is delivered in partnership with Dundee City Council’s Community Learning and Development teams and local community football clubs. This joined-up approach allows staff and youth workers to build trusted relationships with young people and support them beyond the sessions, including helping them engage with education, explore employment pathways and connect with local sports clubs.
The programme is shaped around the needs of the young people who attend, with additional sessions and workshops offered alongside football activity. These cover areas such as skills development, employability and further education, health and wellbeing, alcohol and drug awareness, and community safety, ensuring young people receive support that reflects the challenges they face and the opportunities ahead of them.
Older participants are also given the chance to volunteer within their communities, helping them build experience, confidence and practical skills that can support future employment opportunities. This progression route is a key part of the programme, offering clear pathways beyond participation.
Freekickz plays an important role in supporting healthier lifestyles, reducing antisocial behaviour and strengthening community connections across Dundee. By combining regular sport with targeted support and strong partnerships, the programme helps young people build positive futures in their own communities.
